I have been playing Warcraft since beta. I know what it takes to level, I know what it takes to reap in the gold, and most importantly I know what makes a good game guide. Too many of my WOW friends were wasting there money on crap guides. Today I'm going to help you choose some game guides that actually work.

When it comes to The World of Warcraft, or any MMORPG for that matter, having the skills to get to the end game is really all that matters. The problem is that WOW can be complex, and it can be slow going once you get past level 20. To help, many people are turning to Warcraft Game Guides.

There are literally hundreds of game guides out there. There's leveling guides, guides to earning gold, in-game help systems, and even Race or role specific guides. With so many of them on the market, choosing the game guide that's actually worth your money can be difficult; and, put simply, some of them are crap. With that, let's first talk about what a good Warcraft game guide is and is not.

First, a game guide is NOT the be-all-end-all answer to your leveling, gold, or other in-game problems. You'll still have to get into the game and apply what the guide teaches.

Second, NOT everyone needs a Warcraft gaming guide. If you already have four level 80 characters, and your bank-roll is huge, then the latest guide is likely just a waste of money.

Third, a Warcraft guide IS an excellent way to take your game to a whole new level. A good game guide will take your World of Warcraft experience to a whole new level of enjoyment, and it can help you learn to earn gold and level faster!

Fourth, if you don't take the time to find the right guide then you are just wasting your money.A crap guide can make your game worse, not better, and if you're really interested in getting to the end game you need to take the time to choose the right guide.

To help, along with some of my in-game friends, I took the time to go through the top guides on the market. We worked to evaluate close to thirty guides and from those we found the top five. I based my evaluations on the following criteria.

Warcraft Play - Obviously the whole point of a game guide is to get tips to make the game work better for you.
Up to Date - Since MMO's are constantly evolving, so should the guides that teach us to play them. Higher ratings were given to the guides that looked up-to-date and didn't recommend old styles or techniques
Ease of Game Tips - The best guides we evaluated gave ideas to accomplish tasks quickly without having to work through complex material or spend hours relearning a new style of play.
Guide Value - Did the guide actually teach what we expected? Was what it taught worth the money we spent?
Legal Tips (we hate cheats) - Higher ratings were given to guides that didn't recommend things that violated WOW's TOS. It's no good getting kicked out of the game because some game guide taught us bad ideas.
Overall Rating - From the above criteria we gave each guide an overall rating.

To test each guide we took what it taught and put it through the ropes in-game. With each guide we tested we tried the tips with different levels of characters, with different races, and we worked to learn and implement the ideas we learned. As a side note - we obviously chose appropriate situations for our testing. For example if it was a level 80 tip, it wouldn't make sense to test with a level 20 character.

With the recommendations below - the top rated guide is a gold secrets book. I am recommending Gold Secrets to anyone who plays Warcraft. If you need a leveling guide as well, you may also want to look at one of the other top-five that we listed (number 2 was an excellent leveling guide).

#1 Rated Game Guide for

The best Warcraft guide we found hands down was Gold Secrets. This one isn't actually a leveling guide, but you need this one anyway, and here's why:

Most players in WOW get to a certain level and then begin having problems because they can't afford to keep up. There armor and weapons are levels behind, and they don't have the gold to replace them. With Gold Secrets you get legal tips that will teach you how to make a pile of in-game money without investing a lot of time.

In other words - even if you do plan to buy a leveling guide (see our number 2 pick), you need this one first.

Gold Secrets is written by Luke Brown (a kick ass gamer btw), and in his guide he teaches you many different ways to make gold. You'll get tips for your low-level characters, for you mid level characters, and for the end game. And, here's the best part - every single idea Luke shares really works!

The guide is 325 pages and is laid out in a clean, easy to read manner. The guide itself is actually a lot of fun to read and I'm not much of a reader.

When we tested this one in-game, all of us testing made piles of gold with many of the different tips given. The guide is up to date, provides excellent value, and we're giving it the top pick:

Update: I've just learned that Gold Secrets is on sales for only $37. I contacted Luke (the author of Gold Secrets) and was told that this is a limited-time offer. Soon the price will go back up to its original $67. If you're in the market for a game guide, I do suggest you grab this one now.

In Summary: Everyone who plays WOW needs this guide. Even if you're looking for a leveling guide, get this one first. It will make the rest of your game so much simpler as you make your way to level 80. Gold Secrets is the best Warcraft guide we found in our testing.

2. Zygor In-Game Leveling Guides

In second spot we have Zygor's In-Game Leveling Guides. This is the product we are recommending to anyone who needs an actual leveling guide. I do suggest you get Gold Secrets first, but this one should be your next stop.

Zygor Guides provides two different guides. There is a Horde leveling guide, and an Alliance leveling guide. Both take you through the game from levels 1 - 80 in a way that will help you level up as fast as you can. There are a few reasons why we really liked this one over the others.

First it seemed more up-to-date than any of the other leveling guides we tested. Most importantly though the in-game mod for this one is awesome.

With Zygor's guides you don't need to alt-tab to read a PDF file. You get an actual game guide in the game that walks you through the steps you need to take to level faster. It almost makes leveling automatic.

When using this one, I started out with a Horde character that was level 50. I turned on the small guide and did everything it told me, and I hit level 60 in less than 24 hours (that would take most people a month).

This one is taking second spot and I am recommending it as the top choice if your in the market for a game guide. Grab Gold Secrets first so that you can earn the money to make leveling easier, but make this one the next on your list to buy!

3. Warcraft Millionaire

Taking third spot is a product called Warcraft Millionaire. This one is another Gold Guide, and it is one that we feel is worth the money you spend. It also includes some bonus items (quest guides, etc) that added to the value rating.

Warcraft Millionaire gives tips for earning gold from levels one through eighty, and the ideas do work. However, the ideas that were taught to us with our winning product worked faster.

It was the bonuses that put this one it third spot.

If you're just looking for a gold guide, Warcraft Millionaire wouldn't be my first choice. On the other hand if you want a decent all around guide that includes: basics guide, quests guides, domination guides, and gold tips then this one isn't a bad choice. It's a great all-around WOW guide.

Having said that - if you can afford it, I would buy the top two products on the list together before buying this one. If I couldn't afford the top two together my next choice would be this one.

4. Ultimate WOW Guide

Taking fourth spot we have a product called Ultimate Wow guide. This is another all around guide that includes a game guide, a gold guide, and some role specific guides to supplement the other material.

The package itself includes a pile of content, but it also costs more than the other packages on our list.

Much like our second pick, the guide includes a plug-in that allows you to read the guide in game. The guide works quite well, and it includes auto-detection features so it knows when you've completed one step and are ready to move onto the next.

The guide is very small which we found to be both an advantage and a disadvantage.

If we were playing on a laptop the smaller guide was actually better, on a normal PC though Zygor's guide was easier to read and follow.

With this one - if you play on a laptop (and don't mind spending $100) I would recommend it. Otherwise you'd likely be better off with our top two picks.

5. The Horde Guide 1-80

Last to make it into our top five is Joanna's Horde Leveling guide. Again this one did very well for Play tips, and for ease of use. Much like our other leveling guides it includes an in-game plug-in that worked very well. The problem we had with this one was value.

Since it's just a Horde guide we felt that the other guides on our list offered better value. With Zygor's guide for example, yes we could buy just a Horde or an Alliance guide, but at least we had a choice. Joanna's guide is $77 for the complete guide and all of the content is Horde- specific.

The guide itself is excellent, so I might recommend it to anyone who planned just on playing Horde characters. For everyone else though, grab the top two picks on our list and get into the game!
